Secondary 3 Community Art

Larbert High School’s secondary 3 Community Arts class have great fun using art as a method of engaging with the school’s wider community and get involved in very worthwhile projects.  The school had identified that they wished their class to undertake an art glass project that would assist them to tie in with the school’s enterprise initiative and raise funds towards supporting Strathcarron Hospice.

Given the time of year, it seemed feasible to introduce the pupils to art glass methods that would enable them to make decorations for sale leading up to Christmas.

I taught two main skills, namely etching (by sandblasting) and fusing, with a little bit of slumping thrown in for good measure. These videos show the stages of the processes and, from the nature of their designs, I think you can see how much fun they had. They also raised £300 for their enterprise initiative, demonstrating that art glass can be sustainable.
